Positioned on a limestone outcrop above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Aurelia Retreat reimagines the boutique hotel as a cluster of private terraces — each suite its own small house, bound together by stone paths, olive terraces, and one uninterrupted horizon.
Aurelia Retreat occupies a narrow limestone shelf above the Tyrrhenian Sea, a site so constrained that the architecture had to behave more like terracing than building. Twelve suites step down the cliff in a loose spiral, each one turned fractionally from its neighbor so no two rooms share a sightline — a choreography of privacy disguised as topography.
The brief asked for a hotel that felt like a single private house that happened to sleep two dozen guests. We answered with one material language — local stone, white lime plaster, and reclaimed chestnut — repeated at every scale, from the retaining walls to the door handles.
Materiality
Every surface at Aurelia Retreat is drawn from within a day's walk of the site: quarried local limestone for retaining walls and floors, hand-applied lime plaster the color of sun-bleached linen, and reclaimed chestnut salvaged from decommissioned terrace supports along the coast.
We resisted the instinct to import polish. Edges are left slightly soft, plaster is troweled by hand and allowed to show its maker, and stone is set with the same dry-jointing technique used in the coast's centuries-old agricultural terraces — a material honesty that ages into the landscape rather than against it.
Spatial Experience
Arrival is deliberately slow. Guests are received at the coast road and walk the final two hundred meters on foot, descending a stone stair that reveals the sea in increments rather than all at once — a sequence borrowed from the region's monasteries.
Each suite opens fully to its own terrace via a folding stone-and-glass wall, dissolving the boundary between room and cliff. Bathrooms are treated as outdoor rooms in miniature, carved into the stone with a single skylight tracking the sun across a travertine tub.

Aurelia Retreat opened in spring 2026 to twelve suites, a cliffside restaurant, and a spa carved directly into the limestone. It stands as Atelier Noir's clearest statement yet on hospitality architecture: that the most luxurious gesture available to a building on this coastline is simply to get out of the view's way.
